Fruit Tree Pruning 101:

Sunday, March 16, 10:00 AM at 16550 Nicoletti Rd in Herbster

Ever wanted to start a fruit orchard or have an old apple tree that needs a little attention? Dr. Clare Hintz, owner of Elsewhere Farm, Herbster, will give a class on pruning. You’ll learn to prune on the fruit trees at her farm. Pre-registration is required and a course fee of $15 can be paid at the class. Participants should dress warmly and wear boots. Class size is limited so please email Brian Clements at bclements@northland.edu to reserve your spot.

Growing Great Garlic:

Thursday, March 20, 7-8 PM at Northland College’s SOEI in Ashland

Looking to up your garlic game? Join Josh and Rachel Vanlow of Vanlow Family Farms to learn the ins and out of growing garlic. Josh and Rachel will give a presentation on their farm along with variety selection, mulching, fertilizing and sales.

Composting with Todd

Thursday, April 3, 4-6 PM at 1406 County HWY A in Ashland

Come join Todd Rothe, owner of Big Lake Organics, for a short class on the science of composting. Todd will take you on a tour of the Big Lake Organic composting facility, where participants will get to see how household waste gets turned into food for your plants.

Marketing Your Farms Products

Monday, April 7, 7-8 PM at Northland College’s SOEI in Ashland

Join us for a discussion on marketing your farm products. Whether it’s farmers markets, on farm stores, on line, or wholesale, our panelists will have advice on the ins and out and the strengths and weaknesses of each. Panelists include Renee Bolz of Pinestick Acres, Josh Vanlow of Vanlow Family Farms and Sarah Jackson from the Chequamegon Food Coop. Come with questions for a lively discussion.

Fruit Tree Grafting

Sunday, April 13, 1-3 PM at 86760 Valley Rd. in Bayfield

Learn the art and science of grafting fruit trees! Tom Galazyn, owner of Northwind Organic Farm, Bayfield, will teach you how to combine rootstock and scion wood to get a new tree. Participants will go home with up to 3 grafted apple trees. Participants should bring a non-serrated knife. A course fee of $15 can be paid at the class. Limited to 10 participants so please email Brian Clements at bclements@northland.edu to reserve your spot.

Pork Perspectives

Thursday, April 17, 7-8 PM at Northland College’s SOEI in Ashland

Join farmers Tom Cogger, Dr. Clare Hintz, and Carly Stephenson to learn the ins and outs of raising pigs. Each farmer will give a short presentation on their farm and provide unique perspectives on how they set up their farms for success as well as some of the challenges they face.
